Fumetto Card #47: DON PIERO TUBINO!

Don Piero Tubino, 100 years after his birth, is the solidarity Fumetto Card #47!

The sensitivity of the Genoese priest Piero Tubino towards the theme of peace and non-violence was born from the direct experience of the Second World War during which, at the age of 17, he saw some of his family members exterminated during a bombing of the city.

His first experience as a priest was in a working-class parish in the suburbs. The creation of the Italian Caritas after the renewal of the Second Vatican Council found him ready to share its aims, which he had already anticipated in his commitment to a Genoese solidarity organisation, the Auxilium. He actually founded Caritas in Genoa and collaborated with the national one for many years.

In 1977 the first conscientious objector in civil service was a Genoese: Don Piero committed himself to this new adventure, convinced that it could be an important opportunity to educate young people to “defend the homeland” by putting himself at the service of the poorest, victims of violence of a society that creates inequality. With this attention, in 1993, he represented (together with Bishop Diego Bona) Caritas Italiana at the Mir Sada (Peace Now) march, to take a stand in favor of dialogue in the conflict born from the disintegration of Yugoslavia.

The initiative was made possible thanks to the collaboration with the Don Tubino Association of Genoa which also produced the graphic novel “Svegliare l’aurora” (KC editions 2024), written by Andrea Piccardo and illustrated by Roberto Lauciello, who also created the solidarity card, as already done with Figurine Forever and the previous solidarity cards of Bud Spencer and Don Peppe Diana.

The first edition has a circulation of 193 copies with 100 copies donated directly to the Don Tubino Association of Genoa in order to support, through the contributions collected, their activities and those of the associations involved in projects in favor of the poorest.

N.B. the solidarity stickers and cards project also has the aim of promoting solidarity, raising awareness and keeping historical memory alive; Fundraising is only one part, however important and necessary. For this reason, it is possible that the solidarity stickers or cards can also be distributed at symbolic sums with only the reimbursement of expenses covered, sometimes not even that thanks to the “money box” formula of the Adotta Con La Figurina project, which has become operational since 2023. Special promotions are also planned, especially for titles of which there are many copies still in stock.
