Fumetto Card #44: FREE DHEISHEH

The solidarity Fumetto Card #44 are dedicated to Peace in Palestine, linked to the photographic and drawing exhibition “Liberating the imagination – Palestine 2023-2048” curated by Jeremy Lester, which can be visited starting from 14 March 2024 at the Nassau Center in Bologna and then in other countries (Scotland, France, Greece, Turkey, etc.).

The cards (photo above) are drawings made by children from the Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem, which represented their current daily life; by removing the card (photo below) a second drawing is printed on the postcard which instead represents their hopes in 25 years.

The total number of drawings made and people involved, “today and in 25 years”, is much higher. An absolutely difficult selection was made to choose 4 of the most significant. For this reason the author of the drawings is not written, all the Palestinian children and young people involved in the initiative are of equal importance, as all children in the world should be.

The first printing of 75 numbered copies each is not accidental, 1948-2023, 75 years in fact.

The solidarity cards are available individually or in a complete set of 4, the proceeds are intended to support the creation of the exhibition itself and the “Water for Gaza” campaign by Un Ponte Per as an initiative within the Adotta Con La Figurina project

Material collected by Jeremy Lester, author of the travelling exhibition “Liberating the imagination – Palestine 2023” which also includes 38 drawings and paintings made.

Jeremy Lester, university professor of philosophy and culture and a trained psychological therapist, lived and worked for several weeks in a refugee camp (Dheisheh), located on the outskirts of the city of Bethlehem, in order to help and support young people living in the camp. Dheisheh’s approach was that of art therapy, working with a group of children and young people with the aim of trying to ‘free’ their imagination from the often-horrific conditions of living under occupation from which they all suffer, in close contact with the main educational organisation. of the camp – LAYLAC – Palestinian Youth Action Center for Community Development. The end result was two pictures drawn or painted by each young person. The first work aimed to represent or symbolise their lives and their condition today. Inevitably all these present-day artistic representations depicted something very negative. For the second drawing, however, they were encouraged to represent their hopes, dreams and desires for a better life in the future (with the symbolic year of 2048 chosen), not only for themselves as future adults, but also for their children.
