Not to forget. It’s as if today, from one day to the next, into thin air, Mourinho, Guardiola or Klopp disappeared. Without anything more being known about it and the story and tragedy remaining unknown for decades afterwards.
Celebrative Sticker #71 is Arpad Weisz to whom the eleventh edition of FIGUCON is dedicated, Sunday 14 January at the Estragon Club, the annual stickers & cards expo organized by Figurine Forever in Bologna, 80 years after his death.
Arpad Weisz, born in Solt (Hungary) on 16 April 1896, was one of the greatest coaches in the history of Italian and European football. He won three Serie A championships, one with Inter in 1929/30, in the first historic edition of the single-group championship, two with Bologna in 1935/36 and 1936/37. Under the guidance of the Hungarian coach, “the squadron that makes the world tremble” was also able to triumph at the Expo Tournament in Paris in 1937.
In 1938, due to the racial laws passed by the fascist government, he was forced to leave, in general silence, the bench and our country together with his wife Elena and his two children Roberto and Clara, taking refuge first in France and then in the Netherlands, continuing to train.
At the beginning of the 1940s the general situation in Nazi-occupied Holland worsened significantly and the Jewish population was expelled from school, work and any activity, including football. In August 1942 the Weisz family was arrested by the Gestapo and in October the gates of Auschwitz opened for them. The two children were immediately sent to the gas chambers. Arpad died on 31 January 1944, he was 47 years old.
The collaboration with ANED (National Association of Former Deportees in Nazi Camps) and with the Bologna Football Club, who collaborated in the creation of this solidarity figurine, is renewed and strengthened.
TOGETHER for ANED!
With this solidarity sticker it will be possible to support the “Adotta con la Figurina” project where Figurine Forever engages annually in different solidarity projects and support the activities of ANED the National Association Ex Deported in the nazi camps (http://www.deportati.it/?lang=en); we strongly feel the need to keep the memory of what happened alive and daily, because it should never happen again.
