Viva Chile! The solidarity Fumetto Card series is enriched with a new important and very symbolic image, 50 years after the “golpe” in Chile, Comic Card #39 is dedicated to President Salvador Allende and the musician Victor Jara, both of whom died in those early days of the beginning of the Pinochet dictatorship, which will continue for 17 very long years.
Salvador Allende became President of Chile on September 4, 1970, democratically elected with 36% of the votes and at the head of a left-wing coalition. On 11 September 1973, the government was overthrown in a coup. Allende will die on the same day of the golpe, during the attack on the presidential palace, his last speech on the radio is unforgettable: “.. I have faith in Chile and its destiny. Other men will overcome this gray and bitter moment in which betrayal claims to impose itself.. the great avenues for which the free man will pass will open again, to build a better society. Long live Chile! Long live the people! Long live the workers! ..”
Victor Jara was among the greatest songwriters of South America, musician, theater director, poet, university teacher. Born in 1932, face and voice during Allende’s electoral campaign in 1970, he was arrested and taken to the Santiago stadium, which now bears his name but which was then the scene of the ferocity of the dictatorship. Jara is tortured and his hands are also broken, then inviting him to try playing. He will die on September 16, 1973.

The design of the solidarity card was created by the cartoonist from Mabel Morri, already the author of the comic card #35 of the Cervellati cyclist brothers, deported and killed in Mauthausen. Fumetto Card #39 is freely based on the graphic novel “Chile – From Allende to the New Constitution”, by Elena Basso with drawings by Mabel Morri herself.
