Thanks to the collaboration with the cultural association Il Bar Del Baseball – Baseball Museum of Nettuno (Rome), comes the memory of the unforgettable match played by Italy against the USA on 5 September 1973 in Parma. It’s time for legends!
The solidarity Celebrative Sticker #59 is dedicated to Salvatore “Sal” Varriale, born in Brooklyn on 10-24-1948, who arrived in Italy in 1972 to play for Bernazzoli Parma. A reliable hitter with extraordinary power, he finished his career in 1984. In Parma, as a player and then as a coach and member of the technical staff, he won 9 championships and 13 Champions Cups. With the blue shirt he played 59 matches, winning 3 consecutive European Championships and as coach of the Italian national team he took part in 27 events, winning another 3 European Championships and taking part in three Olympic Games from 1996 to 2004.
In Parma, in that unforgettable match, he was there.
Parma, 5 September 1973, the last day of the 1st Intercontinental Cup, the Italian national team faces the USA, with great public success. It would seem “David against Goliath”, for Italian baseball born 25 years earlier, to face the American masters. Final score 6-5 with a deciding home run by Vic Luciani in the extra inning. The blue baseball legends won.
