Thanks to the collaboration with the cultural association Il Bar Del Baseball – Baseball Museum of Nettuno (Rome), comes the memory of the unforgettable match played by Italy against the USA on 5 September 1973 in Parma. It’s time for legends!
The solidarity Celebrative Sticker #51 solidarity sticker is dedicated to Claudio “Speedy” Cattani, born in Parma on 10-15-1953. The nickname comes from his characteristic of being able to run to first base in three seconds and three after bunting. With 5 championships and 6 Champions Cup he is among the most successful players in the history of Parma and Italian baseball. With the national team he has 28 appearances, participation in two World Cups and two Europeans including the triumph in Barcelona in 1975. His shirt, number 1, is among those retired by Parma baseball.
In Parma, in that unforgettable match, he was there.
Parma, 5 September 1973, the last day of the 1st Intercontinental Cup, the Italian national team faces the USA, with great public success. It would seem “David against Goliath”, for Italian baseball born 25 years earlier, to face the American masters. Final score 6-5 with a deciding home run by Vic Luciani in the extra inning. The blue baseball legends won.
